Introducing Tarnia Lynn Coppers...
The woman who
is the fabulous face, voice and soul
of vintage burlesque jazz sensation,
Sassy Catch!
Born in Perth, Western Australia, from an enterprising Australian
artist mother and a Dutch father who survived 8 years in a
World War 2 work camp before immigrating to Australia.
Tarnia was brought up on a healthy dose of ABBA
and old Saturday/Sunday afternoon movie musicals.
She was caught from a young age popping wheelies on her bicycle
and singing songs at the same time, its no wonder she has fallen
into the genre of performer of old MGM tunes in a flamboyant vaudeville style.
Tarnia had a beautiful natural voice and innate comic timing and talent
on the stage that was honed in school choirs and musicals.
Tarnia's passion for all songs jazz came when she
fronted the schools Swing and Big Band.
After graduating she bought her train ticket
to the big smoke of Sydney and luckily got her first break
as an extra and runner on the set of "Babe". Tarnia went onto
work in every entertainment from front of house at the
Dame Joan Sutherland Arts centre to a special effects technician
holding a fog machine next to Kylie Minogue and a lectern
at the Peoples Choice Awards. If it was arts related she would work it.
Earning her stripes and learning her way, Tarnia worked to pay for private
vocal and acting lessons. Seeing her passion and dedication, Gospel Choir
Director Tony Backhouse took her under his wing 3 nights a week singing
within his choirs. Tarnia was able to hone a powerful gospel chest voice
with brilliant soul tones and gain a range of mezzo-soprano to tenor.
Skip to early 2000 and Tarnia is working in Sydney as a successful event contractor
at music companies, events agents, Fox Studios and in the many events
before and during the Sydney Olympics.
Whilst working on films and theatre shows, Tarnia noticed the public's love of
and yearning to hear the songs from the old movies. It was with the block buster
success of Moulin Rouge and Chicago that Tarnia knew she wanted to bring back
the songs from the MGM era, and headed to Hollywood.
Tarnia spent nine months researching the 50's MGM style. She visited film studios
and cocktail lounges in New York, Niagara Falls, Washington, Savannah, Miami,
San Antonio Texas and Las Vegas. She also went to heart of jazz and gospel,
New Orleans and Southern Louisiana.
Tarnia brought her unique style home to Perth and lounged on top of
many a grand piano singing her sassy songs while being backed by her "boys"
on piano and double bass.
But as nature intends she was always a bit too flamboyant for straight jazz
and has mixed up her style with a delicious vintage burlesque twist.
So whether Tarnia is elegantly singing and swinging relaxed jazz in a corner
to full flying feathers, diamonds and fancy of the MGM starlet upon a stage,
or the raucous vaudevillian interaction with the crowd style with
burlesque dancers beside her, Tarnia is really at home in her element
and is becoming more thrilling with each performance.
